Dr. E. Paul Torrance
- 2007 CPSI Hall of Fame Inductee
^ Top
E. Paul Torrance is known around the world as the “Father
of Creativity” in part because of his nearly 60 years of research
in the field of creativity and gifted education. He attended his
first CPSI conference back in the 1950s and attended many thereafter
with his wife, Pansy. Those who knew him and worked with him at
CPSI spoke often of his kindness and generosity. Because of his
contributions over 15 years, he earned the Service & Commitment
Award in 1986. This year his lifetime of work will be honored as
he becomes the 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee.
The CPSI Hall of Fame Award is designed to honor those CPSI volunteers
who, through their work at CPSI and their lives, support and inspire
creativity and applied imagination. They are considered the elite
in their specific areas of skills, experiences and performance.
Dr. Torrance was the Alumni Foundation Distinguished Professor Emeritus
of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia. He devoted
his career to teaching about and researching creativity. Those in
gifted education applied his work to their work and to teaching
children.
Among the many awards he earned, Torrance was the recipient of
the Arthur Lipper Award of the World Olympics of the Mind for outstanding
original contributions to human creativity, as well as an elected
member of Who's Who in the World, Director of the Bureau of Educational
Research at the University of Minnesota. He was also the chair of
the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Georgia
for nearly 20 years.
Torrance founded the Future Problem Solving Program and was world
renowned for his work in assessing and enhancing creativeness. His
Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTTC), designed to identify
and develop the creative abilities of children and adults, have
been used extensively in education and translated into approximately
35 languages.
Join us at CPSI as we honor a truly great man.

Book Review –
Jack’s Notebook by Gregg Fraley
^ Top
Gregg Fraley and I dined in Chicago recently when our personable
young waiter confided, “My buddy’s scored me an interview
with a software company,” adding wistfully, “I’ve
been waiting awhile now -- drifting.” Without hesitation,
Gregg asked him, “So, what’s your dream?” He replied
comically, “I wish I knew.”
A look of recognition came over our faces. “He’s Jack!”
we agreed. That’s Jack Huber, protagonist of Fraley’s
Jack’s Notebook (Nelson, 2007). Gregg, a long-time CPSI leader
and CEF board member confides, “I knew that when I wrote my
book on CPS, it would be a business fable.” Fraley was inspired
by the work of Patrick Lencioni, author of The Five Dysfunctions
of a Team and Eliyahu Goldratt, author of The Goal. “Narrative
brings an emotional component and when there’s an emotional
component, people’s learning curves soar.”
Jack’s Notebook is both a riveting story and a comprehensive
CPS reference resource. One reader, Bob Anthony, directs Adolescent
Wellness, a non-profit that helps prevent teen depression and suicide.
“It’s an engaging, entertaining read. I learned Creative
Problem Solving. Kids need these skills to build resilience - their
ability to see their way through challenges they face.” Adolescent
Wellness has already begun to integrate CPS into its teen and parent
workshops.
“When CPS first came into my life, I was 37,” says
Fraley. “I thought, ‘Oh, how I wish I knew about these
tools when I was a younger person.’ What I learned at CPSI
changed my life.” Gregg Fraley hopes Jack’s Notebook
will do the same for those who read it.
